Blobpus x MVH Death Sludge Demon

Amazing Blobpus x MVH collab

I love the Blobpus metallic pallet. Also, with this release, Kaji-san used more of a gorgeous mother of pearl silver spray, which works really nicely with the GID base vinyl.
Looking forward to seeing more from the dynamic sofubi duo!
Here's an indoor look which brings out the metallics more.

Diggler & Doji-san tour the South: Birmingham, Alabama

Mutant Vinyl Hardcore's Doji-san and Splurrt's Diggler are on a tour of the South! First stop, Birmingham. It's a beautiful old city best known as a past industrial powerhouse that played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights movement.

Interview with Rich Montanari aka LASH/Mutant Vinyl Hardcore

Here's an interview I shot the other day with sofubi Rich at his studio in New Haven. We had a good chat about Rich's new figures, collabs, events, and Archie Bunker chairs.

Blogspot has been funky with video embedding, so if you can't see the video below, you can check it out on YouTube here.

Visit with Rich Montanari aka LASH (Mutant Vinyl Hardcore)

The other day in New Haven I hooked up with my buddy Rich Montinari aka LASH, the man behind Mutant Vinyl Hardcore and its fast growing sofubi empire. Rich is always a cool dude to hang out with, and he's riding a non-stop slipstream of creativity and ideas for new projects and collabs.
Let's start with some new pics of his studio. (Click here to check out my studio visit report from last year.)
Recently Rich received a a huge order of blanks, including the first pulls of his new figures as well as a big batch of Ollies. Here's a look at some of the figures in his studio - waiting to be painted!

Blobpus x MVH GID Enma 1/1 custom chase revealed

Many Blobpus toy releases are sold blind bagged. That means there's a 1/1 custom figure inside one of those bags.

Recently the GID Blobpus x MVH GID Enmas started shipping. (Click here for a look at that figure next to the first release.)

Lucky collector J.ME (check out his awesome blog here) received a 1/1 GID Blobpus and was kind enough to send us a photo:
For comparison, here's the standard version:

Blobpus x MVH Enma Ollie side by side

Now that the GID Enmas are shipping, I thought it would be nice to take a side by side look at the first two Enma production releases.
I think the colors on both releases are quite a bit different, though they both have the signature Blobpus look.

Mutant Vinyl Hardcore x SpasmOne clear Ollie made to order release

I love me a good pre-order. Even better are made to order releases, a trend which is rapidly catching on. We've seen MTO releases from numerous sofubi makers, including Blobpus, Elegab, and a certain Grody Shogun x KK release. ;-)

Now Mutant Vinyl Hardcore is getting in on the act, with a MTO Ollie collaboration between MVH and SpasmOne. The release features a clear Ollie with guts printed on clear acetate. The result is simply stunning.

The price is $150, and the pre-order will begin on MVH's Big Cartel site on Friday 11/18/2011 at 5:00 PM (presumably EST) and end on Sunday 11/20/2011 at 11:59 PM. (Seiko precision!)

As Rich writes, there will also be a chase version. In his words, "The chase will have different color guts and will come with a half painted fade in MVH color scheme of purple, green black and red !!!

These guys will not be blind bagged, but inserted at random. So there is no guarantee what you will get, but you will get utter gut madness !"

Gut madness never sounded so good.

In detail: Blobpus Enma Ollie Custom

Here are full-scale and detail shots of the Enma Ollie custom I got at the recent Blobpus custom show. Kaiji-san's paint on this figure is incredible. He has evoked an Enma Ollie that is both ethereal and organic, like something straight from Japanese folklore. The colors and level of detail are off the charts. Of all the sofubi figures I've seen and picked up over the years, this is one of my top 5 all time favorites.

These are all hi res shots, so click on each one to see the full size.

Check out the purple veins!

Mandarake x MVH Double Ollie Release

Got there a wee bit early for the release. Seeing Nakano Broadway empty and dark felt like a scene from a zombie movie. When the early otaku crowd started flowing past, my suspicions grew... Then I sat back and relaxed, content in the awareness that I have little brain matter to tempt the hungry undead.
Line starts here.

Backstory and info for MVH x Blobpus Enma

Ever since in-development sculpts of the Blobpus Enma head sculpt for MVH's Ollie started surfacing a little while back, the sofubi world has been buzzing with excitement about the figure's release. Here's a shot I took of the finished Enma head sculpt at Pachisummit last month. (More shots here.)
A few days ago, the first pictures of the debut production figure emerged online, and just yesterday at the Blobpus x Guuman custom show, Kaji-san had the sample out for display.( Go here for details on how to pre-order the figure.)

I sat down with Kaji-san at the show and talked about Enma. Here's what I learned.

Enma is a god that stands at a purgatory checkpoint between heaven and hell. Enma is neither good nor evil. His job is to judge people after they die. Notice the monk sculpted on the back of the head. If a person is judged to be good, the monk will see that the deceased is sent to heaven.
If a person is judged to be evil, this fierce gaze will condemn the person to hell:
The character above his center eye means "king."

As Kaji-san explained, the colors for the first production are the colors traditionally associated with Enma. Kaji-san also pointed out that whereas Enma is typically shown as having two eyes. Kaji-san's interpretation in toy form has three.

A couple of pieces of news about this release. First, Kaji-san will paint as many as are ordered. If there are 50 orders, then 50 figures will be sent out. If there are 100 orders, then that's the release number. Finally, and this is huge news, Kaji-san says he is going to paint ALL of the debut release Enma figures himself. So this release is an amazing chance to order a hand-painted figure from one of the true masters of the art.
