SDCC 2013 - Paul Kaiju's King Jinx

We kick off our SDCC 2013 coverage with a look at Paul Kaiju's newest vinyl figure: King Jinx. I believe the figure has a total of 12 parts. The articulation and playability are fantastic, and the king is a welcome addition to Paul's growing pantheon of sofubi characters.
I took a bunch of shots to show the figure from different angles as well as its poseability, fantastic sculpting details, and the technical mastery that went into the production work.

Paul Kaiju Re-Bootleg figures - first look!

Today at Super Festival 62, one of the coolest things I saw was a set of protos of two upcoming Paul Kaiju figures. The figures, which are being put out by Fig Lab, are called Re-Bootlegs. The reason is their arms and lower half were cast from an old line of 1970s tokusatsu bootlegs, while the head/torso sections are original PK designs. In one word I think the whole concept is AWESOME!
These are some of the figures from the 1970s line of bootlegs. The arms and legs were the same for most of the figures in the line.

Here's a look at the Re-Bootlegs with the vintage figures.

Interview with Paul Kaiju

Paul is in Japan to travel, visit with friends and fellow toy makers, and attend some shows. At his exhibition with Uamou at Studio Uamou, I sat down with him for a few minutes. We talked about his trip, upcoming releases and plans, and thoughts on the indy toy scene.

Ricky Wilson talks toys + Paul Kaiju's newest sofubi figure: Pollen Kaiser

Yesterday during my visit to the Fort I had a chance to catch up with Ricky Wilson (aka Velocitron) while he was working on the wax proto for Paul Kaiju's upcoming sofubi toy: Pollen Kaiser.

In the video, Ricky talks about Pollen Kaiser, upcoming Velocitron toys, the next batch of figures for the TAG Karoshi show, and a lot more.

I brought a tripod this time, so I think the video quality is a tad higher than for previous videos. Luke makes a cameo at the end and proves the ancient adage: left to right tripod swivel good. Limited up down tripod swivel makes photographer look Hobbit sized.

Here are a couple of stills of Ricky working on Pollen Kaiser:

This was the MMMM proto. In the final release version, the body parts were the same, but some joint positioning and other adjustments were made.

Paul Kaiju x Real Head Chaos Carrion

Yesterday at Shinto Gangu, RxH revealed Chaos Carrion (for display only, for now). The mashup features a Chaos Beast head and Boss Carrion body + arms. No decision yet on when these will be released. I think it's a really fun new mashup and proves yet again how versatile and timeless the Chaos sculpt is. It's the first Boss Carrion production release mashup I've seen. Looking forward to more!

Paul Kaiju @ TAG Sofubi Godfather's show

These pics just in from Paul.

The show, which opens July 8 at the TAG Gallery in LA, is shaping up to be outstanding - a signpost of where we've come over the last year, with more overseas sofubi makers designing and driving the development of their own figures and then painting them and selling them through their websites, exclusive releases, collaborations, and shows.

Tons of other preview pics from Bob Conge, Mark Nagata, MVH/LASH, and Blobpus can be seen on the TAG site here.
