Wonder Festival 2014 (Winter) / ワンダーフェスティバル 2014［冬］ Part 1: Medicom Toys

Welcome to Kaiju Korner's coverage of Wonder Festival 2014 (Winter). We start with a look at the always fantastic Medicom Toys display, with looks at dozens of new and upcoming sofubi figures.

This wasn't an ordinary WF, as it came on the day after Tokyo's heaviest snowfall in decades. That had a very big impact on transportation, as both fans and dealers slowly rolled in over the course of the morning.

Jyujin by GEEK! Produced by Medicom (Video)

Jyujin is a huge figure designed by GEEK! and produced by Medicom. The figure was shown at some Medicom exhibitions last year, and then we started seeing releases, at places like the Summer 2013 Wonder Festival, Medicom, and TAG.

The 12" behemoth is imposing, but it also has a thoughtful, brooding expression which adds to the character.

Medicom Toy Exhibition '13 - Be@rbricks

Carrying on with our coverage of the 2013 Medicom Toy Exhibition, here's a look at the Be@rbricks on display. There were some impressive 100%, 400%, and 1000% figures, displays of upcoming releases, and a fascinating step-step-step look at the Be@rbrick production process.

Medicom Toy Exhibition '13 - Sofubi

Medicom's latest exhibition at the Parco Museum (inside the Parco department store) in Tokyo is heavily geared towards showing current and upcoming releases and exclusives. That includes sofubi figures, Bearbricks, 12" RAH and other figures.

There are literally dozens of new sofubi releases in the works from all sorts of makers: Ilu Ilu, Target Earth, Max Toy, and many more, in addition to new tokusatsu releases from Tiger Mask, Kamen Rider, and even Aztekaiser!

Some of the figures shown looked like paint samples. Others were production pieces. And some were prototype sculpts still in development.

Kaws x Medicom Star Wars Boba Fett release!

Today at OriginalFake, the new Kaws x Medicom Star Wars figure was released: Boba Fett! Everyone knew this was going to be a release for the ages, and I think it was incredibly well handled by the store's staff. But the sheer crush of people in line was staggering.

I've never seen anything like it. I got there and walked past the store and on and on, and then around a corner. I heard the line eventually snaked around a couple more streets. The tally was something like 1,600 people vying for around 400 figures (exact total not clear, but that's the number I've heard a lot).

Here's how the release was handled. You had to be in line by 9:00 AM. That entitled you to receive a lottery ticket in front of the store. There were two types of tickets. One was a rejection that basically said you were out of luck. The second type had a time frame on it (mine was 3:00-3:20 PM) with a lineup number on it (mine was 17). That meant you had to be at the store at 3:00 and line up according to your number.

However, having a time slot ticket was not a guarantee of receiving a figure. At 3:00, there were still figures available. But I heard they were gone by the 6:00 PM slot. So somewhere between 3:00 and 6:00, the figures sold out.
